Law Library Services
To access the guide to library services, please click here.
Reference Services:
Professional Librarians are on site most open library hours to assist students and faculty. Student library staff are trained in basic reference services to provide continued help during the remaining open hours. Electronic reference service is available to students and faculty when they are off site.
Library staff is always available to provide instruction in the use of library resources and efficient use of electronic databases. Students are encouraged to ask questions and seek help in understanding the legal research process beyond what they receive in the formal classroom.
Circulation and Interlibrary Loan:
Most secondary source materials may be borrowed for a 14 day loan period with one renewal term. The Law Library maintains borrowing relationships through a nationwide network that includes most law school libraries and thousands of other academic, public and special libraries. The University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth is available for student use through a partnership agreement with us.
Reserve Materials:
High demand materials and Massachusetts secondary source titles are kept on reserve for in-library use. Materials assigned by faculty to an entire class are held on reserve for in-library use.
Other selected sources, such as nutshell series, continuing legal education materials and high demand treatise materials are placed on open reserve shelving in the main library area so all library users have access to these materials quickly.
Instructional Services:
Law Library staff is available to meet the needs of students and faculty for personalized instruction in the use of print resources, electronic research, and internet searching. Our staff maintains an ongoing awareness of new legal related web sites and general internet sites that are useful in finding information quickly and on point.
Students are cautioned about the use of the Internet for accurate legal information.
All first year students receive instruction in the use of Westlaw and Lexis during their second semester.
Reference Refresher classes are held throughout the year for students and faculty.
